USA! Granbury

This little town in Texas has secrets. One is Babe’s. The other is that it is supposedly the most haunted town in Texas. Home to John Wilkes Booth (yes, THAT one), a haunted opera house, a creepy jail and the Nutt House (surprisingly not an asylum).

Here for dinner, the majority of the touristy places were already closed but walking around at night the town was still a sight to see.

USA! Fort Worth

Everything is bigger in Texas, or so the saying goes. I guess for some things I would have to agree but not everything. Food servings yes, houses depends except that guy that’s building a house that looks like a castle then definitely bigger. Even the sky seemed bigger. Prices, in many cases no. Different absolutely. Lots of fun exploring though. Random pics from the trip.

USA! Babe’s in Granbury

It’s Babe’s Chicken Dinner House! And so yum!

Chicken salad of awesome, fried, chicken fried steak, hickory smoked roast chicken and chicken tenders.
Yes, chicken salad made up of 5 different kinds of cooked chicken!

USA! The Grassy Knoll

Finished up at the museum and had to walk to the infamous Grassy Knoll. The wooden picket fence is gone, replaced with a memorial. Even though there was a section about conspiracies in the museum, walking around almost every conversation on the knoll was about assassination conspiracy theories.

USA! The Sixth Floor Museum

History lesson! Shopping and eating took a back seat to taking a self guided tour through the JFK Museum at Dealey Plaza. If you slept through your history class, the Texas School Book Depository Company building is where Lee Harvey Oswald was working as a temporary employee at the building, and fired three shots from a sixth floor window at the presidential motorcade on November 22, 1963. They turned the whole floor and more into a museum.

If you’re there, go.

USA! Taco Tuesday

Rosa’s Cafe and Tortilla Factory on Taco Tuesday, Texas style. Awesome place for brunch and it was packed out but strangely enough, none of us ordered tacos.

USA! Cracker Barrel

Not learning important lessons of days past, we head off to Cracker Barrel for breakfast. Yeah, lots of leftovers. The food was really good though, and the prices were very reasonable.

Grandma’s Sampler – Two Buttermilk Pancakes served with your own warm bottle of 100% Pure Natural Syrup, two eggs, one strip of Thick-Sliced Bacon, one Smoked Sausage Patty, and a sampling of Sugar Cured or Country Ham. Served with Hashbrown Casserole or Fried Apples.

Southern Fried Chicken – Our new Southern Fried Chicken is handmade from scratch with a uniquely Southern attention to detail. The result is a double-battered classic that continues a 50-year tradition of pleasing people at Cracker Barrel.

Signature Cheeseburger – Two grilled-to-order patties topped with our Colby cheese, mayo, and finished with lettuce and tomatoes. Served with Homestyle Fries or choice of one Country Side.

Chicken n’ Dumplins – We take the finest chicken tenderloins and our freshly prepared dumplins and slow simmer them in our own chicken stock. Served with your choice of three country sides and homemade Buttermilk Biscuits or Corn Muffins.

Bottomless coffee too – regular coffee, not the French Toast Latte candy coffee I ordered.

USA! My First Squirrels

Heading back from Hearst Castle we decided to take in the view of the ocean. Right beside the car park was a bunch of squirrels happy to eat our peanuts. First time outside of a documentary or a cartoon.

USA! Hearst Castle – The Tour

We decided on the Grand Rooms Tour. Worth it.

Best for first-time visitors, this overview of Hearst Castle offers an itinerary through the main building called Casa Grande: the Assembly Room, Refectory, Morning Room, Billiard Room and Theater. Tours begin outdoors with several stairs to negotiate on the terraces.
